Ian and Hannah’s wedding at Voewood was exactly the kind of wedding day I love photographing: colourful, full of personality, and completely centred around having a brilliant time with the people they love. Set in the Norfolk countryside, Voewood is one of those wedding venues that needs very little added to it. The Arts and Crafts house, the incredible interiors, the gardens and all the slightly unexpected details make it such a brilliant backdrop for a wedding that feels a little different – and Ian and Hannah absolutely embraced it.
Food was another really important part of the day, with Yellow Kitchen catering an entirely vegan menu for the wedding. I always think food tells you quite a lot about a wedding. It’s one of those parts of the day that brings everyone together, and this was very much a meal to be enjoyed rather than simply something to tick off the running order. There was something wonderfully relaxed about the sharing aspect of the menu, before things inevitably became a little more chaotic later on. And, as someone who is observing it all rather than directing a wedding, those in-between moments are some of my favourites. The conversations happening around the table, people getting up for another drink, the laughter you don’t have to ask for – those are the photographs that really help you remember what a wedding felt like.
The evening finished downstairs in the basement at Pink Lloyds, with one of the groomsmen taking over DJ duties. It was the perfect ending to the day – dark, loud, sweaty and completely chaotic in the best possible way. The sort of dance floor where you stop worrying about what you look like pretty quickly.
Looking back through these photographs, what I love most is just how them the whole day feels. It was colourful without feeling overly styled, relaxed without feeling lacking in thought, and full of personality without trying too hard. I think that’s what makes a wedding memorable for you, not whether everything went exactly according to plan, but the time in which you actually got to enjoy it as the couple.
