Choosing the best venue for your wedding in Norfolk or Suffolk isn’t just about how it looks on a brochure, though they can look very appealing indeed – it’s also about how it feels to be there. But arguably most importantly, it should be about how beautifully it all comes together in your photographs. You know, your forever images. I’ve been photographing weddings across these two counties (and beyond) for 10 years now, and this experience has allowed me to realise that certain venues consistently deliver from a photographer’s perspective. Not just because they’re stunning, but because they’re home to great light, easy spaces to move through, and an aesthetic that isn’t going to dominate the narrative of your day.
In this post, I’m sharing my personal favourite Norfolk and Suffolk wedding venues to photograph, based entirely on my own experiences. These are places where I know the light works, the flow of the day makes sense, and couples can look back through their photos without focusing on negative backdrops or scruffy settings. There are a bunch of different venues out there that serve so many different purposes, and sometimes it all just comes down to budget and availability. But, if you’re in the early stages of planning and you’re looking for a venue that will deliver on beauty and photograph effortlessly, this list is a great place to start with that priority.
1. Oxnead Hall, Buxton
I love returning to Oxnead Hall time and again, not least because it’s my local wedding venue just on the outskirts of Aylsham, but because I simply never get bored of shooting here. It’s vast, diverse, and photographically interesting. There’s history in the buildings, natural beauty in the grounds, and whilst this may have little to do with the photography – it’s also in the hands of a brilliant team, the Unique Norfolk Venues crew.
Talking about wedding venues does very little to emphasise just how great they can look in photographs. The best way to prove this, frankly, is by showing you instead. I’ve blogged a couple of Oxnead Hall weddings in the past which are well worth scrolling through, if this is a venue that peaks your interest. I’ve never not enjoyed a wedding at this venue, which is worth bearing in mind whilst searching for your dream setting.
2. Voewood, Holt
A venue that is really only understood and undertaken by people that want a slight edge to their big day, this rock n’roll house is the ultimate party pad. It is so exciting to shoot a wedding at Voewood, especially on a bright and sunny day as the light leaks through the windows and couples can really make the most of the enclosed outdoor spaces. With its patio feeling like it’s been plucked out of the northern Italian countryside, and its plentiful bedrooms allowing for bustle and movement on the morning of your wedding, this venue has an energy to it that you have to feel to believe in.
It’s another venue that I’ve photographed a dozen times already, but to get a good idea of how it looks throughout the year, you’d be best off viewing Megan and Shaun’s late Autumn wedding here, followed by Teddy and Alice’s black tie summer affair here. They’re very different weddings, but one thing prevails in both – the beauty of the structure of that house.
3. Shotesham Park, Norwich
I think the reason that such pleasure lies in the photographing of the Old Stables at Shotesham, is the neutrality of the tones in the walls of the buildings. There’s something about the colours of those bricks that is so flattering whenever light bounces off them and onto the faces of the people enjoying your wedding. This, and the fact they’ve also managed to inspire a somewhat Mediterranean vibe into this venue. It feels private, enclosed by the tallest trees you’ve ever seen, and has the loveliest walk up from the car park for your guests to enjoy.

4. Butley Priory, Woodbridge
Another venue that benefits from neutral tones and clean backdrops, Butley Priory in Suffolk is small in stature but grand in design – and never, ever boring to photograph. I think this is the perfect venue for a timeless wedding. There, I said it! History never ages, ironically, so to pick a venue that’s so steeped in it is a no-brainer. And whilst you’d have to opt for a marquee for larger numbers of guests, everything would still remain contained enough for your day to flow with ease.
A particularly gorgeous day was had here at the height of summer by Natasha and Ollie, as well as Poppy and Jack’s big day here in early Spring.
5. Hengrave Hall, Bury St Edmunds
And finally, I’d love to introduce you to Hengrave Hall in Suffolk. It’s the venue I’ve visited the least of the five, but nevertheless, the impression it has left on me has been long lasting. It has the most gorgeous prep room to photograph in, with large windows that let in plenty of light – and light is a must-have for a photographer at any wedding venue. Their indoor ceremony space is one of the only letdowns for light and space, but they also have an on-site Church to offer an alternative option with more light. It was a particularly wet day, and despite this, you’ll see that the light still held strong throughout the venue.
So what’s the big takeaway, then? I suppose for me, it’s all about having an abundance of light at your venue – looking out for big windows during prep, ceremony and speeches. It’s also about choosing a venue that isn’t too complex in its design or styling, to allow your photos not to be aged by the backdrop you’ve chosen. And finally, go for a wedding venue that you love, above all else. All of the things I love about a venue, as a photographer, won’t matter if you aren’t in love with the space you’ve chosen. It’ll be in your images forever, just as your images will remain forever. So make choices that you’re happy with, and the right photographer will always have the expertise and skill to pull it out of the bag for you – almost always.
